URRDAP

Ubuntu Rural Resource Development & Advancement Programme

“I am because we are — together we are strong.”

Converting rural South African communities into commercial fresh‑produce suppliers — through community‑owned cooperatives on lease‑to‑own land, anchored to market demand, powered by precision‑farming technology and backed by a multi‑stakeholder partnership.

Two names, two roles

UBunTeCH is the engine. URRDAP is the vehicle.

Technology alone doesn't lift a community — land, markets, skills and public support have to line up at the same time. That is why UBunTeCH, the company, drives a programme rather than simply selling a product.

The company

UBunTeCH

Builds and operates the farm‑to‑fork data platform: precision growing (Automate), supply‑chain intelligence (Cultivate) and shelf‑level ESG transparency (Elucidate). Earns from yield‑share, data, SaaS and label licensing.

The programme

URRDAP

The partnership that puts the technology to work where it matters most: communities farming as cooperatives on land they come to own, supported by government, NGOs and investors, selling to committed value‑chain buyers.

The model — one programme, two drivers

Community‑owned cooperatives, on lease‑to‑own land, selling into real demand.

Driver 1

The technology — UBunTeCH

  • Automate — solar‑powered field units on LoRaWAN sensors automate per‑sector irrigation and nutrient delivery. Zero upfront cost to farmers. Data layer live · field pilot Q2 2027
  • Cultivate — harvest yield and quality forecasts let buyers plan collection and cut spoilage. Phase 2 · 2027+
  • Elucidate — verified production and environmental data via QR at the shelf. Phase 3 · 2028+
Driver 2

The multi‑stakeholder network

Communities, value‑chain partners, government, NGOs and investors — each contributing what they are best placed to give, each gaining something they need. No party carries the load alone.

Organisation → regional cooperative centre → farmer: the platform's own access structure mirrors the programme's governance.

Why government wins

Aligning with a development programme that pays its own way.

Rural development has too often meant grants that end when the funding does. URRDAP is structured as a public‑private partnership so that public support catalyses the programme and commercial revenue sustains it — giving government a success it can stand behind, not a line item it must keep funding.

A workable land‑reform pathway

Lease‑to‑own land moving into collective community‑trust ownership — transformation without the risks of expropriation.

Jobs where people live

500 direct jobs in Phase 1, 16,500 in Phase 2 — rural employment that slows the drift to urban informal settlements, and can draw people home.

A growing rural tax base

Commercial cooperatives create taxable income and GDP in regions that today mostly receive transfers.

Less grant dependence

Grant and concessional capital set each community up; yield‑share revenue and offtake contracts carry it afterwards.

Measured, not claimed

Sensor‑level data gives auditable, real‑time impact reporting (MRV) — outcomes a ministry can report with confidence.

National priorities, delivered

Aligned with South Africa's food‑security, land‑reform and rural‑development priorities, and seven UN SDGs.

PPP‑structured by design. Formal government engagement is being actively pursued and is not yet secured.

Validated before built, tested before deployed

Seven years from validated framework to deployable programme.

2019

Framework validated

URRDAP developed in the founder's MSc thesis (HSLU): structured expert interviews and two FMCG questionnaire rounds confirmed corporate engagement.

2024–2026

Data platform built

19 months of R&D; ground unit and data platform running 9 months without downtime; Swiss pilot sites secured.

Q2 2027

First field deployment

Live deployment in Switzerland — the proof of concept for the South African rollout.

2027–2029

Phase 1 rollout

Three URRDAP beta communities in South Africa, cooperative‑owned from day one.

Grant & concessional capital catalyses…

Site irrigation and platform infrastructure · cooperative formation and governance · farmer training · impact baseline and MRV set‑up.

…then the commercial engine takes over.

Revenue share on incremental yield sustains operations · offtake contracts anchor demand · no community remains grant‑dependent after establishment.
